Counselling Notes Protect Solicitor – Women’s Legal Service Queensland

Women’s Legal Service Inc. (WLS) is a nationally recognised, leading and innovative not for profit organisation in Australia Queensland.  WLS provides high quality legal and social support services to vulnerable women, specialising in the areas of family law, domestic violence, financial abuse and sexual assault through our counselling notes protect program.

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Counselling Notes Protect Solicitor to join our team.  This role will represent, and work on behalf of victims of sexual assault in relation to applications for parties to access and use their counselling records in legal proceedings in the Magistrates and District Court.  This role also has a training, information and advice components, for sexual assault services, the legal profession and other key stakeholders.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Representing victim survivors of sexual assault, including providing advice, file management and advocacy in  matters in the Magistrates, District court in response to applications to subpoena and other wise use records which are or could be ‘protected counselling communications’.
  2. Providing legal information and advice about the application and procedure of the sexual assault counselling privilege, to clients, sexual violence prevention services and other relevant services and agencies.
  3. Providing legal information and advice about broader sexual violence legal issues for clients such as sexual violence criminal proceedings in general.
  4. Providing services to women in a trauma informed practice framework, or be willing to learn.
  5. Ensuring safety considerations are routinely and comprehensively addressed when undertaking legal work providing support, information and advice to clients.
  6. Contributing to a collaborative team culture of staff and volunteers which is professional, productive, supportive and consistent with the WLS Values.

Skills and Capabilities: 

  1. Eligibility to hold an Unrestricted Solicitor’s Practising Certificate and a minimum of 3 years’ post admission experience.
  2. Extensive experience in the conduct of criminal law matters, ideally including domestic violence matters, including providing advice, preparation, representation and particularly advocacy.
  3. High level of knowledge of referrals both legal and non-legal that are appropriate for women who have experienced sexual violence.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively and work sensitively with clients from diverse background including vulnerable clients.
  5. Well-developed relationship management and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to engage with a range of audiences and stakeholders internal and external to the WLS with the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the WLS and an ability to work within a feminist framework.

REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

  1. An attractive remuneration package ($88,920 – $92,872pa depends on experience) plus statutory superannuation (10.5%).

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

WLS has an exemption under the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that allows for the employment of women only within the organisation.

WLS requires all staff to have at least two COVID-19 Vaccinations.

This role is required to have a current QLD driver’s licence.

Successful applicants will be required to complete a National Police Check.
