Caxton Legal Centre
In operation for over 40 years, Caxton Legal Centre offers free legal assistance and social work services, publishes self-help kits and handbooks, and undertakes community legal education and law reform activities.
Caxton Legal Centre represents the interests of people who are disadvantaged or on a low income when they come into contact with the law. Caxton is an independent, non-profit, non-government community organisation.

Commercial leases or to business owners, investment products, financial advice or products, gambling products, purchase or selection of insurance, investment properties, superannuation fund issues, taxation, building and trade disputes, goods and services over $40,000, professional disputes with doctors, lawyers, accountants etc, Centrelink disputes, personal injury, income protection, immigration, native title or conveyancing or wills and estates.

Caxton Legal Centre’s Family Law Service and associated Duty Lawyer Services can assist with a wide range of family law problems including parenting issues, urgent recovery applications, separation and divorce and much more. Visit the web page or call the service for more information. Referrals to domestic violence services can be provided. Advice can be provided to either the aggrieved or respondent for domestic and family violence matters.
Family law duty lawyers are available at the Brisbane Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia. Our domestic and family violence duty lawyers provide legal advice to self-represented respondents at the Brisbane Magistrates Domestic Violence Court. To obtain assistance from a duty lawyer, clients should speak to the relevant officer within the Court complex when they arrive for their day in Court. No appointment is necessary.
The Seniors Legal and Support Service (SLASS) provides free legal and social work support for older persons experiencing elder abuse, mistreatment, neglect or financial exploitation. Older persons experiencing abuse may contact the service directly. Family members and service providers may contact us to refer an older person for whom they hold concerns and SLASS will then contact the older person directly.
Caxton Legal Centre’s Bail Support Program social worker and lawyers help men on remand at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, Brisbane Correctional Centre and Woodford Correctional Centre apply for bail and access support services.
The Employment Law Service can help clients who are earning less than $80, 000 or, if dismissed, were earning less than $80,000 prior to their dismissal.Visit the web page for more information.
The Queensland Retirement Village and Park Advice Service (QRVPAS) is a free legal service for existing and prospective residents of retirement villages and manufactured home parks.
The Financial Protections Service community worker provide information and referrals about your finances in later life as well as community education services.
Caxton has a specialist Consumer Credit Law Service that focuses on consumer debt.
The Coronial Assistance Legal Service provides legal advice about any aspect of the coronial process and associated issues and representation for bereaved family members appearing in some inquests.
