Senior Lawyer (Child Protection) – HUB Community Legal

The Senior Child Protection Lawyer provides legal assistance to people experiencing disadvantage, with a focus on child protection matters. The role leads HUB’s partnership with Queensland Foster and Kinship Care to deliver legal advice, case work and representation to foster and kinship carers. This position also supports HUB’s broader community legal centre services, including community legal education and law reform activities. Working within a client-centred, trauma-informed framework, the Senior Child Protection Lawyer fosters a culture of collaboration, respect, and continuous improvement. The role may also involve mentoring or supervising early-career lawyers and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Legal Service Delivery:

  • Provide high-quality legal advice, case work, and representation to people experiencing disadvantage, with a focus on child protection law;
  • Provide legal services in accordance with HUB’s policy and practice, applicable laws, professional obligations, and the mandatory requirements under the National Association of Community Legal Centres Australia (CLCA) Risk Management Guide;
  • Deliver services that are trauma-informed, accessible, and tailored to the needs and capabilities of clients;
  • Maintain accurate and timely file notes, records, and data in line with funding, organisational, and professional requirements;
  • Provide child protection and/or domestic and family violence duty lawyer services as rostered (or work towards accreditation where required);
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of HUB’s community legal education and law reform activities

Mentoring and Supervision:

  • Be a nominated person within area of practice in accordance with the Risk Management Guide to supervise, review and settle advice provided by volunteer and early career lawyers, as required.
  • Mentor and/or supervise other lawyers to develop their legal, client and practice management skills;
  • Be available to other lawyers and admin staff for questions and debriefing needs;
  • Share knowledge and legal expertise at internal meetings and training with both legal and non-legal staff members;
  • Support legal advice clinics, as required;
  • Develop and maintain legal resources relevant to area of practice;

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain & lead HUB’s partnership with Queensland Foster and Kinship Care, including:
    • Coordinating the partnership activities, referral pathways, and ensuring accessibility of legal services;
    • Building and maintaining professional relationships with QFKC stakeholders to support effective collaboration;
    • Developing and delivering professional development sessions for QFKC case workers.

Compliance and Record keeping

  • Follow all relevant laws, contracts, and HUB policies and procedures;
  • Keep accurate records and complete documentation and reports, as required;
  • Maintain high standards of work and report any issues or risks to the Managing or Principal Lawyer.
