Community Legal Centres Queensland has joined with Justice Connect and other signatories of the Joint Statement on Fundraising Reform to call on Governments across Australia to #fixfundraising by moving an outdated and burdensome fundraising regime to a modern-principles based regulatory regime.
The proposed three simple steps to fundraising reform are:
1. Clarification and minor amendments to the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) to ensure application to fundraising activities is clear and broad
2. Repeal of fragmented state and territory fundraising laws, and
3. Work with regulators and self-regulatory bodies to provide guidance to fundraisers to continue to improve fundraiser conduct.
This approach is supported by the Australian Institute of Directors, the Governance Institute of Australia, the Australian Council of Social Services, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, the Community Council of Australia, CPA Australia and Philanthropy Australia. It is also supported by an increasing number of NFPs, their professional advisers and other bodies (including Community Legal Centres Queensland): as at 9 December 2016, more than 170 organisations and individuals representing more than 570 charities, more than 85 legal centres and more than 3,750,000 individuals across Australia.
