Sue* is a disabled pensioner who relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Sue gets out in the community via her local bus. The bust stop closest to her house was not wheel-chair accessibility. This meant Sue had to be dropped off at an alternative bus stop or mid-route which caused significant distress and humiliation.
Basic Rights Queensland provided Sue advice and assistance in resolving her dispute informally with her local Council.
Her Council agreed to upgrade the closest bus stop to ensure it was wheel-chair accessible and provided interim arrangements for her to catch the bus until the upgrade had been undertaken.
Sue was satisfied with the outcome and pleased that she didn’t have to lodge a formal complaint.
