First Nations CLE toolkit: engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to create meaningful access to justice

Hosted by: Community Legal Centres Queensland

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people often face barriers in accessing legal support. It is important that legal resources and services are culturally appropriate, and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are consulted and have the opportunity to advise on areas of legal need that affect them.

YFS Legal – Logan’s community legal centre – believed that many First Nations people in Logan were not accessing the legal help they needed, when they needed it.

To increase community understanding of rights and improve access to legal services, YFS Legal developed a First Nations community legal education (CLE) program with the First Nations people of Logan.

In this webinar Natasha Tanirau-Stanley and Candice Hughes from YFS Legal will share how their team of First Nations researchers engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to identify legal needs and gaps in service delivery. They will also showcase the First Nations community legal education toolkit to provide resources and advice on how to deliver CLE to a First Nations audience in a culturally appropriate way.
